SIR Hosts Two-Day Workshop on Mediation, Preventive Diplomacy

A workshop themed "Mediation, Dialogue and Preventive Diplomacy" was held jointly by the School of International Relations (SIR) and Finland"s Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on the 25th and 26th of June 2019 with a focus on "Case Study of Hostility in Afghanistan". The 12-hour workshop, taught by three CMI directors, was attended by more than 30 political experts from the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Parliament and the Expediency Council on the SIR campus.
The first day of the workshop commenced by theoretical discussion about the "nature, inclinations and challenges of today"s hostilities", "identifying the main actors of hostilities and the role of third parties in the peace process" as well as "major mechanisms of settlement of disputes and guidelines". The event went on with a case study on hostility in Afghanistan from the viewpoint of "Afghanistan"s domestic actors and domestic issues" and "perception of domestic dynamics and its impact on the peace process scheme in Afghanistan".
On the second day, the participating experts were divided into five groups to simulate under CMI supervision the United Nations mediation efforts. Following preconceived scenarios and instructions, the participants played the role of delegations from the Taliban, United States government, the Afghan government and the Pakistani government to learn about practical and operating challenges to mediation and negotiations.
On the final day, the participants and professors concluded and assessed discussions held throughout the event and exchanged views about them.
The closing ceremony included an address from Dr. Mohammad Hassan Sheikholeslami, director of SIR, and awarding certificates to the participants.
